WARNING This Novel contains a warning solely intended to sell more copies. Prison shouldn’t be funny. Should it? If you’ve ever wondered what it's like inside one, maybe visited one, worked in one, or even been banged up in one, then this darkly comic novel will have you in stitches. In Dead Reckoning you’ll step into the polished boots of Mr B, an institutionalised prison officer with control issues and deteriorating mental health. Told 'in the moment', this novel takes you on an alcohol-fuelled struggle to rid the prison of drugs, with exactly the opposite result there’s more heroin in the prison than there is on the surrounding streets. So much so, that it can only be down to corrupt staff – a fact which Mr B finds impossible to ignore, especially when he inadvertently becomes one of them! If you’re the sort of person who is offended by violence, drug smuggling, prostitution and corruption then maybe you ought to buy something from the romance section. But if you have an edgy sense of humour and like unconventional fiction, this gritty novel will teach you a riotous lesson about morality. Adult audiences only. Actual maturity not required. DISCLAIMER All characters that appear in this novel - even the ones based on real people - are totally fictitious. It should be noted that all characters are innocent until proven guilty by reading the bit that incriminates them.

Dead Reckoning Paul McMahon Books

This is not your everyday crime novel. You experience a prison guard's life through his brain - it is a booze-soaked, paranoid, exhausted, almost non-functional brain. Almost. Lest you fear this book is another stream-of-consciousness bore, let me assure you that it is not. It has plot, it has layers. There is comedy and tragedy. There is even a Greek Chorus of sorts that provides commentary in the form of literary, popular and philosophical references to enlighten the action and antics on stage.

In all the messiness of his life, his North Star is his job. A thankless, low-paying, dangerous, soul-warping occupation which our guard has managed to fashion into something meaningful through a dubious set of his own made-up goals and criteria. In his mind he is an expert at going by the book, even though he constantly abuses the "appropriate force" requirement - sometimes on a whim or to be seen as part of the team effort.

The writing here is wonderfully imaginative, the prose often beautiful. The author is not a slave to the genre.

Read it.

It's a keeper.

Dead Reckoning Paul McMahon Books Reviews

This book is absolutely brilliant. A gripping, twisting, heart beat raising journey of a plot and a main character who you can't help but like, even though you shouldn't. Warning you will be unable to put this book down! Paul McMahon is a very talented writer with ingenious imagination and skill.
Wonderful first novel. Total entertainment. Can't wait for next offering by Paul. Dead Reckoning is a must read this summer.
This book was a very entertaining look into a prison ward. It is not written in a normal boring style but instead changes with the thoughts, the sobriety and the mental state of Mr B. It kept me drawn in to the last.
Not fully knowing what to expect from this book, I have to say I greatly enjoyed it. I don't usually read books like this, but was intrigued by the subject. A piece of fiction that portraits the everyday workings of a prison guard. It easily can be a piece of reality, regardless of the actions in this book be proven fact or just be rumored to be happening in prisons around the world. I recommend this book to anybody that isn't disturbed by the harsh on goings in prisons and bad language. At times it is even funny.
